Some marginal waterstaining throughout BUT not within the images, four plates only spotted within the image - thus a working or breaking copy. Mysteriously bound with a section from Mouradja d'Ohsson, Tableau General de l'Empire Othoman 1787- containing engraved title, dedication and 26 plates ONLY from the first volume of this work, plus the plate index on 4 text leaves. Why these are bound together is unknown. Leather bound in half nineteenth century dark calf, rubbed. THE FIRST RUSSIAN WORK IS SCARCE - WITH 100 FINE PLATES and is the first work in English to give an accurate representation of the manners and customs of the ordinary Russian people (DNB). According to Major Abbey in his bibliography - the plates show the spontaneity and spirit possible when the artist is his own engraver... the colour is skilfully done in soft washes.
